Ryazan is a small city in Medved Oblast, the Matriarchate of Periaslavl. Its current boyar is Vitya Ivanovich.
It was founded in 591 by Hakon Rurikson, its first kniaz. Its foundation prompted the promotion of Volodomyr Rurikson to velikokniaz and then, therefore, to a larger multi-settlement polity called the Grand Duchy of Periaslavl.
By the early 18th century, however, Ryazan has lost most of its political position and is no longer the seat of a kniaz. However, it remains an important trade hub since it lies south of Medvedgorod on the Irtysh River, making it an important trading hub.
