Pomestnik

A pomestnik (pl. pomestniki) is the main class of warriors in the Matriarchate of Periaslavl. They are fairly heavily armed and armored and are usually well-trained and disciplined. The vast majority are expert riders, though a few troops specializing in mountain fighting are infantry.

Usually, they wear steel lamellar or riveted chainmail with open-faced helms, often with a nasal. The mountain troops tend toward slightly lighter armor. All pomestniki are trained with a variety of weapons, including bows, lances, swords, and spears.

They are organized in troops, which include between one and two hundred warriors. Most of these troops are assigned as needed, but each kniaz and Great Husband has a troop dedicated to themselves.

One becomes a pomestnik by taking service with a boyar or a kniaz, who is responsible for providing proper equipment, training, upkeep, and, should it be necessary, funeral costs.
