Manannan mac Lir

Mythology: Islander
Portfolio: Sea, ships
Large Temples: Caer Uffren
Symbols: Fragarach

Pronunciation

ma-NA-nan mac leer

Manannan mac Lir is the god of the sea in Islander mythology. Though Dagda is the king of the gods, the nautical focus of the Western Isles means that Manannan is the most worshiped god in that realm.

He lives in Emain Ablach, an island paradise.

He sails all Eard's oceans and seas on his ship, the Sguaba Tuinne, a morcurrach that none can catch. He crews the ship with the greatest of sailors.

He wields the sword Fragarach, the Whisperer, which is fatal to all touched by it. Though he is the god of the sea, this sword is his primary symbol.
