ing-VAY-on-ik COE-hort

The Ingvaeonic Cohort was an early military unit of the Empire of Sabinia stationed in what would become the Kreisens.

Its patron deity is Athena.

Though named a cohort, it was essentially a full legion of ten cohorts. The confusion arose after it was initially stationed across the Middle Sea. At this point, it was in fact a cohort, but military necessities forced the Empire of Sabinia to continue sending more and more men. Rather than re-naming the unit and listing it among the legions of the empire, the Cohort, which had earned many battle honors, strove to keep the original name to honor their previous successes.

In the late 174 IR, Aurelius Ianuarius Sergius was named its commander. When, in 183 IR, Aurilius was adopted by Flavius Decimus Laurentina to become the Imperial heir and part of the Laurentian Dynasty, the Cohort chose to follow Aurilius wherever he went.

The reign of Aurilius was not easy, in part because the families who had hoped to place one of their own on the Imperial throne saw him as an interloper. By the end of his reign, the Ingvaeonic Cohort had been driven back north of the Middle Sea. Aurilius died with few allies around him.
